Layout & Navigation
Choose how users will navigate your guide.
Quick Reference for Layout & Navigation
- Guide Navigation Layout — The majority of our guides use the same side navigation layout. It is ok to use box-level navigation so long as your guide does not also use subpages.
- Guide Custom JS/CSS — Do not use this setting. It is preferred that all custom code is managed at the system-level.
- Prev / Next Links — Use this setting if your guide is best viewed in sequential order.
- Display as Single Page — Do not use this setting unless you need to print or make a PDF of your entire guide.
Getting There
- Log into LibGuides https://usfca.libapps.com/libguides/.
- Select Content > Guides and click the Edit icon for the guide you want to update.
- Click the Guide Layout icon to select and save your options.
Guide Navigation Layout
Navigation layout is disabled for research guides and internal documentation guides. The default layout for these kinds of guides (and the majority of all guides on the library website) is side navigation, which consists of:
- A side column that displays your guide's page navigation and profile box.
- Additional content is added whenever appropriate, such as buttons or related info links.
- A main column that displays the content of your page.
Best Practices for Navigation Options
- Show all subpages in side navigation — Checking this box displays all subpages in the side navigation menu. By default, subpages will only display in the navigation menu when viewing their top-level page.
- Only check this box if you have 7 or less total pages — Displaying subpages can produce an overabundance of options and makes it challenging for users to navigate your guide.
- Show box-level navigation for selected page — Checking this box displays links to each box on the page in the side navigation menu.
- Only check this box if you are not using subpages — Displaying subpages and box-level navigation produces an overabundance of options and makes it challenging for users to navigate your guide.

Guide Custom JS/CSS
Do not add any custom JavaScript (JS) or CSS code to your guide. It easy for additional code to get lost when it is assigned at the guide-level. Custom JS and CSS is best managed at the system-level.
Prev / Next Links
This option will add navigation buttons at the bottom of each page on your guide. If users will move through your guide in sequential order, select the checkbox next to Check this box to display First, Next, Previous, Last navigation links at the bottom of each page.

Display as Single Page
This setting will display your entire guide as a single page. The navigation of your guide will remain intact.
Do not use this setting unless you need to print or make a PDF of your entire guide. Always return your guide back to its default settings after making it a single page.
