Article Summaries

Under the Hood

What powers Hein's AI tools?

HeinOnline’s Article Summary feature is powered by a proprietary, in-house artificial intelligence system. The AI infrastructure is developed and operated entirely by HeinOnline’s technical team and is trained only on HeinOnline’s internal datasets. The company’s documentation states that all summary generation occurs within their private environment—there is no integration with external generative AI platforms, cloud APIs, or public LLMs. HeinOnline has not publicly disclosed the specific names or architectures (e.g., transformer models, custom LLMs) of its AI systems. The focus is on high data security, model transparency, and control, rather than leveraging outside AI frameworks or popular commercial models.
