Embedding Videos in Canvas

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) allows instructors to easily embed videos from select library databases — such as Alexander Street and Films on Demand — directly into the Assignments and Module pages of your Canvas course.

Alexander Street

  1. Search for the Alexander Street video you want to link to.
  2. Click Share.
  3. Next to Via Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), click Copy .
  4. In your Canvas assignment, under Submission Types > External Tool, paste the copied URL
  5. Click Save & Publish
  1. Search for the Alexander Street video you want to link to.
  2. Click Share.
  3. Next to Via Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), click Copy .
  4. In Canvas, add an item to your module by clicking on the + in the module bar.
  5. In the pop-up window, change the drop-down menu to Add External URL.
  6. Under URL, paste the copied URL.
  7. Add a Page Name.
  8. Click Add Item.

Films on Demand

  1. Place your cursor where you want to embed the video. 
  2. Click on the icon for External Tools and select Films on Demand.
  3. Enter the exact title or search for a video by keyword or phrase. 
  4. Preview the video if necessary and then select the video you want to embed. 
  5. Select Embed Small, Embed Medium, or Embed Large, to add a video window into your assignment.
  6. Click Save at the bottom to save changes.
  1. In Canvas, add an item to your module by clicking on the + sign in the module bar.
  2. In the pop-up window, change the drop-down menu to Add External Tool.
  3. Select Films on Demand in the list.
  4. Enter the exact title or search for a video by keyword or phrase. 
  5. Preview the video if necessary and then select the video you want to embed. 
  6. Select Embed Small, Embed Medium, or Embed Large, to add a video window.
  7. The URL of your selected video will populate in the URL field. Click Add Item at the bottom to add the video as a module item.
