Databases for the Reference Scavenger Hunt
Explore the differing capabilities and coverage of three search engines used for finding scholarly, peer-reviewed articles.
- Google ScholarArticles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Click "more" below to customize Google Scholar to access USF library journal subscriptions.
Google Scholar is ideal for basic keyword searching, and is adept at providing easy access to recent scholarly articles. It is less effective for detailed searching when robust limiters for dates, subjects, and other indexing is needed.
Be sure to customize Google Scholar to access Gleeson Library journal subscriptions: see "more" in the database description above.
- ScopusScopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Delivering a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities, Scopus features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.
Socpus is an ideal search engine for complex searching involving many parameters — it provides the detailed indexing and advanced features for this kind of searching that Google Scholar lacks.
Scopus also contains extensive citation metrics and other data for articles, journals, authors, and institutions. The author information is particularly useful for the scavenger hunt.
- SciFinder-nRegistration Required — see: "More" below. Citations and abstracts for journal articles from more than 10,000 journals covering the biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more; patents; substance and chemical synthesis information; includes CAS Registry database, Analytical Methods, Formulus, and ChemZent.
SciFinder, like Scopus, is ideal for complex, detailed searching, but emphasizes chemistry-related journals and information. Registration is required to access SciFinder.
In addition to article information, SciFinder is unique in collecting extensive data and information on chemical substances, reactions, and suppliers.
